According to the most recent UNWTO forecasts, an intensified competition in the tourism industry will happen in upcoming years, as a result of the emergence of new destinations, and because of the increasing heterogeneity of the tourism source markets.
As a result, new destinations and new tourist segments will arise. Moreover, it is expected that traditional destinations across Europe or North America will experience a reduction of their relative market share in favour of new emergent destinations in Asia and the Pacific, Africa, etc. Within this global situation, assuring tourism destination competitiveness (TDC) will becomes vital for destinations around the world.
Extensive research on TDC has been conducted over the past 20 years, with key attempts to model the concept (e.g., Crouch & Ritchie, 1999; Dwyer, Mellor, Livaic, Edwards & Kim, 2004). In general, the literature has sought to identify TDC’s main determinants, aiming to support destination managers when planning, designing and implementing destination policies and marketing strategies.
However, given its significance, complexity and effects, it can be said that there are still many pending issues in the TDC research agenda. That is why a group of researchers from Europe agreed to launch this call for contributions for those who may be interested in a continuing analysis of the topic.
Specifically, for this workshop to be held on September, 16th, at the University of Extremadura, Cáceres, Spain, we would like to invite to participate those who may be interested to discuss state of the art knowledge about the following three broad topics: (a) sustainability, (b) the tourist experience, and (c) actors and stakeholders at destinations.
These topics were selected according to the main gaps that the authors of this call have found on the current TDC models. Thereby, the purpose of this upcoming workshop – or think tank – will be to bring together researchers who are interested in sharing and discussing their perspectives on the above-mentioned topics and to work on a new conceptual approach to TDC. We plan, with this discussion group, to lay the theoretical ground work that will pave the way towards empirical studies that group members will collaborate on.
